Step 1:
Ask the attendees to write down three words that they would like others to associate with them. Said another way, if the attendee was not in the room when a conversation was being had about them, how would they like to be referred to?

Step 2:
Explain that a personal brand is all about influencing other people to think, say or write about you in such a way that you would like them to.

Step 3:
Explain that a personal brand is all about influencing other people to think, say or write about you in such a way that you would like them to.

Step 4:
Ask them to think of an influencer in the world today. How would they describe them and what has made them think that way?

Step 5:
Explain that a blog is a “weblog”, a place on the internet where you can write about the things that you are passionate about. If an employer was to google you, then your blog is likely to appear high on the page of results. Ask each person what web site domain they would choose for a blog. Many will choose a formula of “firstname[no space]”.

Step 6:
Ask the attendee to go to and see how much it would cost to buy that web domain or else show this via laptop on a screen. There is often surprise at this point at either how cheap it is (as many domains cost less than a dollar) or else how expensive it is (as some premium domains have a high price tag as somebody famous with a similar name could have a lot of traffic going through a competing site).

Step 7:
Give the group the direction to write a blog post. In this, they would need to write about something that they’re passionate about and why. They need to write in such a way where they convey the three words that they would like their readers to think.

A student might say that they want to be seen as kind, intelligent and likeable. Their passion is music.

They might write about how listening to music makes them feel good and YouTube gives many people who are getting started in their music career a free platform to build an audience. They might go on to talk about how music connects with people at different stages in their lives and can be very helpful during times of mental health difficulty. Music is a form of expression that can encapsulate somebody’s feelings in a poetic way that’s put to a suitable tone. They could elaborate to say how they enjoy listening to their friends’ favourite music too as they’re open-minded to other people’s’ point of view. They might finish the piece with how they’re excited about all of the music that they will listen to right throughout their lives because there is an infinite amount of it available.

As they convey their thoughts in this way, they’re using positive language which applauds the industry for the good that it brings and is thoughtfully cognisant of how those getting started will have an opportunity to move forward. This demonstrates kindness. The person shows that they are familiar with the role that music plays in society and an understanding of how it can play a crucial role for people at certain stages of life’s journey. This empathy reiterates kindness and illustrates intelligence, particularly of an emotional nature. Finally, the fact that the writer is open to other peoples’ views and preferences with interest is evidence of a likeability factor.
